Introduction
Who can play?
Grades 4-11 (Ages 10-17)
About:
The JCC JRS volleyball program gives youth the opportunity to play volleyball at a high level. Over the years, our program has developed athletes and prepared them to play volleyball at a college level of play. This non-profit development program is designed for high school, middle school, and elementary-age athletes.
Improve volleyball skills through practices and tournaments we are a member of the North Country Region Organization and USA Volleyball.
Below you will find information for all current members, prospective members, and parents in regards to the services and regulation of the JCC JRS.
It is strongly suggested that all members, both new and returning, read this Handbook before participating in the program. Please be familiar with:
1. Payment Requirements
2. Practice and tournament attendance guidelines
3. The responsibilities of both the parents and the athlete
Our Mission
The JCC JRS mission is to support each athlete to reach their goals to become a better volleyball player and to approach the game of volleyball with good sportsmanship and high motivation all while having fun, learning, and loving the game.
Commitment
Season begins in February.
Coaches will evaluate if a player needs to play up a level. This will depend on numbers, positions, and skill. Please check the JCC JRS Facebook Group Page frequently for the latest updates.
The season will end in May-second week- depending on the scheduled tournament dates. The only exception to this time-frame would be if any of the teams are interested in qualifying for Nationals or playing in extra tournaments.
Coaches understand and recognize that there are athletes who participate in many other activities. At no time will the JCC JR program tell you to choose between JCC JR Volleyball and another activity. Just keep in mind that this is a commitment as well. This is a team sport and members of your team, including your coach, will rely on you to fulfill your commitment and role at practices and tournaments. We try to schedule around the athletes’ extracurricular activities, but it is not possible to schedule around all of them.
Practices
Practices will be held at least two days per week, typically at the JCC High School. Practices may be held at other locations.
Generally, practices begin no earlier than 6:00 p.m., unless an exception is granted.
The older athletes (14s, 16s, and 18s) practice later in the evenings to prevent conflict with JCC Schools extracurricular activities.
There will be some occasions when practice is held on Saturdays and Sundays. Please understand that we can only schedule practices when the gym is open. School activities take precedence when scheduling for gym time.
JCC JR coaches are responsible for scheduling their team practices and will notify athletes of the schedule once it is approved. Also look at the JCC JRS Facebook page for scheduling information.
Attendance at practice will be noted by JCC JRS coaching staff. It is the responsibility of the parent and/or athlete to notify the coach of an illness, upcoming absence, or if the athlete will be late for practice. In order for the program to be a success for each athlete, the more practices they attend, the more they will get out of the program. Attendance may play a role in the playing time an athlete receives.
Tournaments
The JCC JRS ages 12s, 14s, 16s, and 18s play in approximately 5-6 tournaments per season.
The 10s/11s division will play in approximately 4 tournaments.
Tournaments are scheduled on both Saturdays and Sundays, depending on availability and athlete’s schedules. JCC JRS try to stay as close to home as possible to support area tournaments, but some tournaments may require travel or overnight stay.
Playing time will be at the discretion of the coach, who will utilize each athlete’s abilities that will best serve the team’s needs. The attitude of the athlete, the level of competition, the athlete’s ability and practice attendance, the needs of the team, and the importance of the event will be used in determining the athlete’s court time. The coaches will do their best to play all athletes.
Tournament Travel & Expenses
Transportation to and from the tournament events will be the responsibility of the parents. At NO time will any JCC JRS athletes be allowed to drive themselves or any group of athletes to a tournament. This also means NO boyfriends will be allowed to drive the athletes to any events. The only exception to this will be home tournaments held at the JCC High School gym.
Hotel accommodations are also an expense for all athletes. As stated before, JCC JRS will try to stay as close to home as possible, but teams may have overnight tournaments during the season. Parents are responsible for making reservations. Parents can also schedule a block of rooms, to encourage athletes to stay at the same hotel whenever possible.
Responsibilities & Code of Conduct
Membership in the JCC JRS Volleyball Organization carries with it responsibilities to the organization. This applies not only to the club participants, but to the parents as well. Please keep in mind that you are not only representing yourself, but you are also representing the JCC JRS Club.
- Players, coaches, and parents should have a general knowledge of the sport of volleyball. This includes the USA and North Country Region rules and regulations, they do differ from high school rules.
- At any time, no athlete, parent, or coach shall make disparaging remarks about or gestures towards another player, team, coach, official, or parent.
- At all times, members and coaches are expected to act appropriately and dress respectfully. Please keep in mind that you are representing JCC JRS.
- When participating in a tournament, players and coaches should not leave personal property or team belongings unattended. JCC JRS is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
- Players and parents are responsible for leaving all facilities neat and clean. Please follow the rules regarding food and drink locations.
- No team member may leave an event without checking with the team coach. (Example: When we are officiating, players MUST stay to work the match before they are allowed to leave.)
Grievance Procedure
The JCC JRS program is a club organization and is not affiliated with the JCC School System. Please DO NOT contact any school employee if a problem arises.
If a problem or concern does arise, please contact the Director(s) to arrange a time to sit down and discuss the issue within an appropriate setting (coach, parent, and player will be expected to participate in the meeting with the Director(s)). At no time is it acceptable for a parent or player to bring concerns or grievances to a coach during tournament play.
Remember, you are representing the JCC JRS program and this type of “altercation” is unacceptable and could result in player dismissal from the program. Again, please contact the Director(s) to set up a time and place for your concerns to be heard.
Communication
Frequently, pre-tournament information is delayed. The program director will release the tournament schedule as soon as it becomes available. Usually this is the week prior or the week of the tournament.
As a parent/athlete, familiarize yourself with any information you are given. Please be open to the fact that the schedules do change at the last minute. JCC JRs will do their best to inform you of any changes as soon as possible. Your patience and understanding is appreciated. If you have any questions, don’t refrain from asking your coach or the Director. Tournament schedules will be posted on the JCC JRS Facebook Page.
Coaches may send information or tournament schedules home with the athletes or email them as necessary, but the JCC JRS Facebook page is where you should check for all pertinent communication.
Injury Policy
All injuries must be reported immediately to the Coach or Director. Payments made to JCC JRS and NOT refundable except in the care of an injury that concludes an athlete’s ability to participate for the remainder of the season. The amount refunded is prorated based upon the amount of participating of the athlete. To receive a refund, a statement must be received from the athlete’s physician.
Uniforms
The membership fee does not include uniform costs.
This includes volleyball shorts, shirts, shoes and knee pads. All players will be required to wear knee pads. Volleyball shoes are highly recommended. Please avoid purchasing cross-trainer, running, or basketball shoes for volleyball. All shoes are made for each sport for a reason.
The athletes will keep their uniforms when the season has ended. Cost of the uniforms will range from $60 on up. The cost of the uniform is for the jersey.
Players must purchase shoes, spandex, and knee pads on their own.
JCC Home Tournaments
IF we are allowed to host a tournament-
The teams are responsible for the set-up and tear-down of all equipment. Please check with your coaches as everyone is responsible for this. Your help is required! Failing to communicate with your coach may affect playing time at the next tournament.
Do not leave the tournament without ensuring with your coach all requirements have been met.
To help support the JCC JRS program, each player is asked to bring treats (bars, pickles, muffins, rolls, oranges, bananas, puppy chow, chex mix, etc.) for the concession stands for each home tournament they play in. Please do not bring granola bars.
Concessions
IF we are allowed to host concessions-
Each athlete and parent will also be required to help in the concession stand for at least one tournament. Attendance for this is also mandatory.
A schedule is sent around for players to sign up or is communicated through the JCC JRS Facebook page. If you do not meet this obligation as required, you will be charged $40.00.
Financial Obligation
A payment schedule is set up to help athletes meet the financial obligations for membership. It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to ensure that all payments are made on time. If the payments are not made on time and you have not made contact with the Treasurer, an athlete will be held back from practice and tournament time.
All registration forms and first payments are due by January 31st.
A one-time payment may be made with registration (SEND to DEB SCHULLER) or a payment plan may be utilized.
All payments must be made in the form of a check or money order payable to JCC JRS.
No cash will be accepted and all payments must go to the Treasurer. Directors or coaches will not accept payments.
Payments are to be mailed to:
Deb Schuller
1014 Grant Street
OR
Bank Midwest – Jackson
Jackson, MN 56143
Refunds
After an athlete’s registration form and money has been handed in, no refunds will be given to any player that has participated in the JCC JRS program before (with the exception of injury).
All new volleyball players that have not played with the JCC JRS organization before will have until the first tournament to decide if they want to continue with the program.
Once they have played in a tournament, their money will not be refunded. The NCR membership fee is non-refundable once you pay online.
Uniform costs are non-refundable once the order has been submitted.
*If COVID restrictions shut us down, the directors will be discussed on what is fair for a refund.
Officiating Training Requirements
All players from ages 10-18 will be required to referee, score, and line judge at all tournaments.
All JO Athletes must participate in an officiating and rules clinic.
Players will be taking their training online. These courses are on the NCR website. It is important players understand their responsibilities and the rules of the game. It is a good opportunity for parents to learn the game as well if they listen as their player participates in the online training. A certificate of completion will be printed and sent to the Director.
